SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM, “SKT”) announced that it has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). SKT was first included in the DJSI World in 2008 and has been included in the index for a total of 15 years, excluding 2020.
Announced annually by S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), the world’s leading index provider, Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) are float-adjusted market capitalization weighted indices that measure the performance of companies selected using environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.
The DJSI, including the DJSI World, were launched in 1999 as the pioneering series of global sustainability benchmarks available in the market. The DJSI World consists of the top 10% of the largest 2,500 stocks in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, based on their ESG practices. This year, only 22 Korean companies were included in the DJSI World and SKT is the only Korean telecommunications company in the index, which includes only seven telecommunications companies worldwide.
The company said that it received high scores in corporate governance, materiality, biodiversity, human rights and customer relationship management for its multifaceted efforts, including the strengthening of the ESG management system centered on the Board of Directors, the implementation of the double materiality assessment*, the advancement of its biodiversity policy, the application of extended human rights due diligence, and the establishment of a quality management system for its distribution network.
* Double materiality assessment is an assessment methodology that analyzes the financial impact of external environmental and social factors on companies and the impact of companies on the environment and society in both directions.
This year’s DJSI evaluation results will be reflected in S&P DJSI funds and related ESG index funds when the U.S. securities markets open on December 18, 2023.
“We are proud of our track record of inclusion in the DJSI World and will continue to further advance our ESG management to meet internal and external assessments and expectations,” said Park Yong-joo, Vice President and Head of ESG at SK Telecom. ” As an AI company, we will take the lead in spreading a good impact on society and the environment by fully leveraging our technology, and create sustainable growth with our customers.”
