SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM, hereinafter referred to as “SKT”) today announced that it was presented with the ‘Best Use of Mobile for Accessibility & Inclusion’ Award at the 2022 Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards at MWC22 Barcelona.
The GLOMO Awards, chaired by Shaun Collins, Executive Chairman of CCS Insight, are adjudicated by over 200 independent industry experts, analysts, journalists, academics, mobile operator representatives, and CTOs; and are widely recognized as the most prestigious accolade in the mobile industry.
Together with Tuat, a social startup in Korea, SKT won the ‘Best Use of Mobile for Accessibility & Inclusion’ award for an AI-based visual assistant service, ‘Sullivan Plus x Nugu.’
To make the daily lives of the visually impaired and elderly easier and support their economic activities, SKT and Tuat joined forces to develop the ‘Sullivan Plus x Nugu’ AI service. By providing both voice and vision AI features, the app dramatically enhances the experience for people with visual impairments as well as seniors with low vision, allowing them to easily use diverse services with just their voice.
The judges commented: “This app will have a huge positive impact. It removes day-to-day barriers and shows a keen understanding of the challenges disabled people face in their day-to-day lives. The judges also commend the developers for their attention to those disabled users who are less tech-savvy and can be excluded.”
SKT has been making diverse efforts to better support seniors and the socially weak based on its advanced ICT, winning awards in this category for three consecutive years.
At this year’s MWC, the company announced that it will further strengthen its AI-powered ESG efforts by launching the ‘Barrier Free AI’ project, which aims to create a barrier-free society by applying AI to all its ESG activities.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award as it highlights our on-going efforts to enhance people’s lives through innovative ICT,” said Yeo Ji-young, Vice President and Head of ESG Alliance Office at SKT. “Going forward, we will strengthen our ESG management and continue to introduce human-centered technologies and services that can lead to the creation of greater social value.”
